Omniblog

A blog about any and every thing.

Dear Citizens of Austin, Texas,

I’m sorry for closing Ben & Jerry’s at Mopac and Duval.

I’m sorry for closing Baja Fresh in La Frontera.

I’m sorry for closing Kitchen Door downtown. (First victim, in 2001ish)

I’m sorry for closing Kitchen Door on Far West.

I’m sorry, kind of but it might’ve not been my fault, for closing Salsalitos (or however you spell it) on Parmer. The reason I say it’s not my fault is shortly after this one closed, I noticed the others around Austin were closed too.

I’m sorry for closing Tin Star on McNeil.

Yes, I might be cursed. I have religiously eaten at all the places above, then the location would randomly close.

The recent victim is the Kitchen Door on Far West. They closed all their stores. So, this one might not be my fault. Check their website: The Kitchen Door.

So, I apologize for any future occurrences of this phenomenon and I apologize for the past occurrences.

Sincerely,
Me

7/25/2009 – Tickets purchased in May – Tori Amos on her latest tour – haven’t seen her since 2001 because I keep missing when she swings through

As you can tell by those phrases, I am not a rabid, crazy Tori fan. Tori Amos fans are a different breed in general, There are those that are just nuts for her (nicknamed EWF – Ears with Feet – no clue what the hell this means), and then there are those, like myself, that understand and know she’s pretty much a musical genius, and enjoy listening to her music and her magical fingers on a piano.

Listening to her albums, getting to know her music, is nothing as compared to seeing her live.

Seeing her live – you are in for one hell of a fantastic show, and Saturday night was no exception. There was only one small issue with seeing her live this go round, last time I checked, when did people stand up during a Tori concert? When I saw her in 2001, no one did. Now, most of the center section did (I was in the center section). Is it the music, which I could understand, is it a change in fan base? I never figured it out, but I kinda went with it because, it’s a concert, stuff like this happens.

Then 3/4 of the way through the show, people starting walking from their seats to the aisles near the front. Never seen that before either at a Tori concert.

I could give a break down of each song, but I won’t because there are countless sites you can visit for that. My purpose is to just provide a brief overview of the concert.

One thing I will point out about the show: She did a freaking phenomenal cover of Don McLean’s “Vincent” and dedicated it to her brother who “never missed an Austin show”. It was awesome.

Click here for the set list for Saturday’s show.

So, with Tweetdeck 0.26.4, you cannot see your own tweets like you can with other clients, and older versions of Tweetdeck.

However, if you try to add yourself to a group, this is what you get:

TweetDeck-Follow-Self

What’s wrong with that picture? I mean, seriously.

I’m afraid to hit “Follow”. I really am. I’m afraid I might cause TweetDeck to spontaneously combust.

I am but a simple man. I am also a passionate man in many ways, but I have one passion that I would like to expand on, and how I got to where I am now. (The others you can ask me about outside of this blog if you are interested) :-)

Music

The Early Years – Piano
This passion I have carried since I was in early elementary school. And not just rock n’ roll, but all types of music. I started early on playing piano, as some do, but I did performances, competitions, and other various things with my music. I even played for one of the authors of a piano book I used to hone my skill. That, was stressful enough for me.

The Middle Years – Viola/Choir
“What the hell is a viola?” IMO – It’s a bigger, lower pitched violin which implies it doesn’t have the high E like a violin, and with a funny little symbol for the music (no treble or bass clef here). I did this primarily in middle school. I was apparently pretty good, or so I was told, but after middle school I quit playing. I have a small interest in picking up another stringed instrument. I’d like to learn the violin/fiddle. It was around this time that I learned I could sing. Granted my voice hadn’t changed yet, so I sang, ahem, alto. For that age, it’s kinda funny, but yet it made sense.

The Later Years and Now – Guitar and Singing
Finally, in 1994, I gave in. I finally decided I wanted to learn the guitar. With my piano background, and yes, I can still read sheet music, it came pretty easy knowing the notes, and what went where on a musical staff. The tones and stuff came too, but the chords. Oh fuck the chords and the pain. That’s the worst part of learning, the chords. My fingers hurt for weeks until I finally adjusted. Now, I could play for hours with no problems.

I took a few voice lessons in recent years and was told I do have the ability, which I do, but i lack the ability to do it on my own without some sort of backup vocals to help me find the right pitch and note. This is typical, from what I understand, and I just need to work on it.

My Influences

Piano – Nothing really directly influenced me to play piano other than I enjoyed it, well ok, maybe my parents, but nothing has influenced me to pick it back up other than a few people telling me I should. Although, Tori Amos makes a good argument for making me want to pick this up again.

Guitar – Only recently have I discovered my idol for guitar playing. This is where my passion lies. Watching this man do magical, and almost impossible sounding, things on an acoustic 6 and 12-string guitar is just amazing. My fingers don’t even move that fast. The name?

Leo Kottke

Look him up, buy his stuff, that dates back to 1969, see him in concert, I have seen him twice. But most importantly, just listen. It’ll blow your mind and entertain you. If you happen to get a copy of some of his live stuff, be prepared for a comedy show built into a music concert. He’s quite hilarious when you see him live with his stories and quips between songs. As one lady put it last time I saw him, April – 2009, “Did we come here to see a comedy show or a concert?” I didn’t have it in me to tell her “Ma’am, with Leo, you get both. It’s a 2-for-1 package deal.”

Who got me into Leo, you might ask? That is a random answer.

My Uncle Steve and Aunt Carolyn. (My mom’s brother and sister-in-law.) I am a guy, I was in my 20s at the time, and I am hard to shop for. For my birthday one year in mid-1990s, they gave me a copy of “Essential Leo Kottke”. I was hooked. And, only recently, did I go on an Amazon.com and Half.com hunt for the rest of his albums. Thanks Steve and Carolyn, although they will probably not read this, but if they do, I’ll be tickled if they leave me a comment. :)

Will I ever be able to play like Leo, probably not, but I’ll always love to hear him play.

So, if you have a chance to grab some songs by Leo, or if you happen to be able to hear him concert, go. For the love of music go. You won’t be disappointed. He’s not getting any younger either.

And, you’re welcome.

My apartment is dark. Why? Because I keep forgetting to buy more light bulbs, energy efficient ones at that.

So, today, today is light up my apartment day. I tried to the other day, but whoever lived in my apartment before me decided that only leaving 2 “holding” screws, instead of 3, for the light globe in my office was cool. Not to mention, thought tightening one of those screws all the way in would be super awesome too. Punkass.

Oh, not to mention, I face the same dilemma I did in my old apartment, my office desk is right under the light in my office, which makes changing the bulb quite a dangerous task. And yes, I mean dangerous. I am not so sure the desk is meant to hold my weight, and my Herman Miller Aeron chair is not exactly a good place to put one foot to balance.

Soooo….I have to probably get some sort of small step-stool. Hell, I could probably use one anyway. And a new screwdriver that’s a bit easier to use for things above my head. I am not going to be able to get that one screw out without a good screwdriver. Oooh, I could get a battery one *insert Tim Allen grunt here*. Oh yea…

So, Home Depot here I come after work!

Punks and their pain in the ass ways of putting a light globe back on. I might post a Twitpic of the stupidity if I can get enough light up there. Just so I can show the utter silliness and stupidity.

This is a quick n dirty review of Tweetcraft, the Twitter client for World of Warcraft.

Just hearing about it today, of course I had to try it, and I’d like to sum it up by saying: Nice try guys, very nice try.

It works, but due to limitations within WoW, it doesn’t work as one would expect.

1. You have to run an installer to make it work since it requires some MS C++ runtime libraries.

These are used to run a client outside of World of Warcraft. The addon then connects to this client to get tweets from your Twitter account. The client looks pretty with a jumping bird on the window.

Since when did a WoW addon require running setup.exe. Some do for ease of use, this one does because it has to for dependencies.

2. The updates are not even close to what you get with a normal Twitter client on your PC or Mac. If this is what you are expecting, then skip to #3. I wasn’t sure what to expect.

To refresh your list, and even post your own tweets, you must click a refresh button which then does a /console reloadui. Yes, the addon must reload your UI to post tweets from you and update tweets from your list. This is more than likely due to a number of factors. One being a limitation in the WoW UI (which is fine, it wasn’t meant to handle stuff like this honestly).

Now granted this is more than likely not to be used for pseudo-real time, or close to what Tweetdeck and Destroytwitter do, but still, reload the console? To some people, that’s like stabbing their eyes due to computer speed.

3. It will post all kinds of WoW related stuff unless you turn off the option.

Like Achievements, login/logout, zoning in and out of instances, etc. That’s a bit too much, even for me.

4. It will post screenshots to twitpic from within the game is pretty neat, I might hvae to try that later.

I can see that being used if you down Yogg-Saron in Ulduar for the first time and want to show it off. I have no problems with that. I’d be damn proud too. :)

All in all, it’s very impressive they got it to work, but there are limitations within WoW that would make it painful for some to use. I will keep it installed, and only use it when I feel like it.

Dear God,

Yo, man, what’s up! I kind of have a bone to pick with you, you, you diety!

2 weeks ago, you took David Carradine from us.

Last week, you took Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson.

Sunday, you got good ol’ Billy Mays.

Can I ask a question?

Are you just randomly picking people? I mean, seriously, what are the odds of all 5 of these all passing away within days of each other, if not hours. The math person in me is really struggling to understand the statistical numbers.

Can I ask a second question?

Can we have a break in July please? It’s hotter than hades here in Texas, and I’d like to try to stay hydrated and stuff and not worry about big name people passing on.

Thanks,
-Me

Now, back to the subject at hand. It took me one solid night of listening to Michael Jackson music and a weekend to realize what happened on Thursday really did happen. I remember seeing Thriller for the first time when I was a kid, and just thinking “Wow”.

I was looking forward to him getting his act together and doing his comeback tour. That would have rocked, but unfortunately God and nature had other plans. It saddens me, greatly.

It saddens me to see Ed, Farrah, David, and Billy all pass on as well.

I’m gonna miss Billy’s corny yelling telling me to go to espn360.com or to buy Mighty Mendit! I owe it to Billy as to why I ever bought OxiClean. I still use the laundry stuff. It’s pretty awesome.

I remember seeing Ed on The Tonight Show, Bloopers and Practical Jokes with Dick, and on Star Search. I loved those shows growing up. I want to hit the Time Life site, or other place, and get a lot of the Tonight Shows on DVD because it was so awesome.

David – ah David, I shall watch Kill Bill and Kung Fu repeatedly in your honor soon. I will also miss your Yellowbook.com commercials, too.

Finally, Farrah. Farrah – what can I say. Smokin’ always. I’m sure St. Peter took one look at you and went “Will you sign my Charlie’s Angels poster, please? I’m a huge fan.”

RIP all, and we will all honor you in our own ways here.

God, what a pain, but I finally got moved after finally realizing what I needed to do to move from justgeek.me to here, moomesa.com.

Why the move? Because with me, it’s just weird to not have something with moo in it given that seems to be my nickname just about everywhere online (except my twitter account, but that might change). So, someone suggested this, and I could get .com instead of .info, or .me, or .whatever. Will I park on moomesa.net, .info, etc, probably not. At least not yet.

Oh, and how did I move, some fancy footwork and the SQL commands here:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/01/how-to-move-wordpress-blog-to-new-domain-or-location/

More posts coming today/tomorrow. I’ve had one brewing about all the recent deaths, but I wanted to wait until after I got moved to post it.

As I posted a while back, I was testing something with Twitter with regards to who you follow and what you type, and how that relates to robo-follows.

Well, just today, I decided to do something. I took my test account and followed everyone it suggested.

In the span of an hour, I had 15-25 followers. I then followed a few more random people, and I had 5-10 more followers.

Right now I’m sitting at 228 following, 38 followers with 3 random updates I did (one is a recent RT cause I could).

This could get interesting. I am going to start doing more random follows soonish and see if I can get above 50-60 followers without really doing anything.

Stay tuned….

Facebook Usernames are Coming!

I had a totally clever post about this whole thing in my head and then once I decided to write this blog post I though “Who the hell cares?” If you do a search, there’s a blog post that someone did outlining what might happen when this all takes effect. Wow, I’m sorry that you wasted your time with that blog post Mr/Mrs/Ms Blogger. I did this one in a lot less time, and got my point across. Is it humorous, yes, but kinda stupid IMO.

As far as user names: MySpace does this, and did this very early on, LinkedIn does this, Flickr does this, a lot of other sites do this.

Attention people freaking out: Get a damn life. I think I see Perez Hilton hitting on Ashley Simpson’s husband. Now, go, fetch and have fun.

This is nothing new and innovative. Facebook is simply playing catch-up.

Yea, I’m done. Carry on, nothing to see here.
